Levitation

The brief was to create a structure from a select set of materials which embodies the word 'Levitate'. Limitations were imposed in an effort to drive design therefore we could cut each material a maximum of three times. The materials we were given were timber joists, canvas fabric, chipboard and metal clips

Levitate was my first project at the University of Bath. I enjoyed that this was a group project; coming up with the concept together and physically having to build the structure was a great bonding experience and introduction to the design process. Furthermore, because we handbuilt the structure, it was essential to not waste the materials.

This project was my introduction to using materials in tension and in compression. By using the canvas in tension and timber in compression the structure is rigid. This allows for the pyramid shape modules to be assembled and disassembled with ease. The feeling of levitation is then induced by creating a view through the structure up into the clouds.

Music Box

The brief of the project was to design a framed building on University of Bath campus where people can experience music. I developed the brief to be a multifaceted space allows for both private and public use. This Private practising rooms transform into a concert venue by opening large pivoting doors, incorporating the green amphitheatre held within.

A curved fin shape was the culmination of various sketches and models used to slot into the pre-existing tree-line and paths. The fin acts as glare protection during the winter months whilst roof lights allow for daylight to flood into the space. The purpose of the building was to provide a break for students and teachers on campus in which they could relax listening to music.
